| Landmark Theatres is celebrating the anniversary of one of Houston’s most historic movie houses with two old-fashioned double features. River Oaks Theatre, 2009 W. Gray Ave., will host the “We Love Houston” film series showcasing movies made in the Bayou City.
All proceeds from the series will benefit Greater Houston Preservation Alliance, which has been promoting the preservation of Landmark’s historic River Oaks Theatre. The River Oaks opened in November 1939 and is the last historic movie theater still operating in Houston. The films will be shown on consecutive Mondays.
Monday, Oct. 30: Apollo 13 at 7 p.m., followed by Rushmore. Houston Film Office Director Rick Ferguson will introduce the movies and provide background on their production in Houston.
Monday, Nov. 6: Terms of Endearment at 7 p.m., followed by Paris, Texas. Houston’s own Lynn Wyatt will introduce Terms of Endearment and share anecdotes about the production from her good friend Shirley MacLaine, who won an Academy Award for her performance in the film. Gary Chason, casting director and Susan Elkins, location manager for Houston production of Paris, Texas will also be in attendance and provide background on that film.
Films will be shown in one of the balcony theaters. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Reservations will not be accepted for individual films.
For reservations, e-mail info@ghpa.org. Please indicate the number of people attending and the date(s) they will be attending. Suggested donation is $10 per person for each double feature. Payment in cash or check will be collected at the door. No credit cards, please.
