When the West University Primary School opened in 1925, it was a state-of-the-art educational facility. Eighty years later, the historic school buildings were still a vital part of their community, but they required a major renovation and expansion. Working with the Houston Independent School District, architects English + Associates created two separate additions that meet new program requirements while reflecting the original buildings’ design. Repairs to the historic structures included tuck-pointing and sealing the signature brick detailing, which was repeated on the new additions. This project recognizes that our historic school buildings are unique assets that provide stability and continuity to their neighborhoods, and the restoration carefully addresses neighborhood concerns by preserving the campus’s distinctive character.
