Architect Maurice J. Sullivan designed the St. Anne Catholic Church parish hall as the first building on the church’s campus at the corner of Westheimer Road and Shepherd Drive. After its completion in 1929, parishioners used the hall as a temporary sanctuary for 10 years while funds were raised to build a larger church. Decades later, when the proposed expansion of St. Anne School called for demolition of the building, the parish insisted that the old parish hall be preserved, citing its history as a place of worship. Bailey Architects designed the project, which restored the building’s exterior and created new classroom and office space inside. The renovation removed a drop ceiling to reveal the original wooden trusses that are now the signature feature of the new Shea Center for Administration and Fine Arts. Even the builder shared this sense of tradition: Fretz Construction, the general contractor for this project, also built St. Anne School in 1934 and the present church in 1939.
