The Old Sixth Ward Neighborhood Association’s Good Brick recognizes its tenacious efforts to preserve and protect Houston’s first National Register Historic District. More than 20 years ago, local residents had a vision of what this forgotten and neglected neighborhood of Victorian houses could be, leading homeowners to form the neighborhood association to help realize that vision. With slow, steady progress, they gradually achieved their goals — but success also brought new challenges. Despite the Sixth Ward’s designation as a city historic district, scores of 19th century homes were replaced with incompatible new development. Faced with the very real threat of losing what they had worked so hard to achieve, the neighborhood association began an extended campaign that included innovative YouTube promotions. In August 2007, Mayor Bill White, with strong support from City Council members Adrian Garcia and Sue Lovell, passed a landmark ordinance designating the Old Sixth Ward as Houston’s only protected historic district, meaning the historic fabric of the neighborhood will be preserved for generations to come.
