Though this 77-year-old duplex is on a prominent corner in a stable Montrose-area neighborhood, the house stood vacant for nearly 30 years. If the hanging gutters, burglar bars and torn window screens hadn’t deterred potential buyers, the water damage, termite infestation and remnants of a failed remodeling effort would have. When visionary new owners purchased the duplex in 2005, they set out to create a modern single-family home while preserving the original design and craftsmanship. Architect Donna Kacmar included the creative use of recycled materials in the project: Cabinets were made from re-milled door jambs, cast-iron tubs were refinished and original hardware was replated and reused throughout the house. The Winlow Place Civic Association enthusiastically supported this nomination, commending the homeowners for outstanding work and for honoring the design guidelines that have preserved the character of the neighborhood since the 1920s.
