Houston architect Herb Passeur designed this Rice University-area home for his family in 1967. The challenge facing the new owners and their architects, Glassman Shoemake Maldonado, was to repair deteriorated areas and delicately update the mechanics of the house without changing the building’s character and original design intent. The renovation used original materials throughout the house, including rough-hewn cedar, Saltillo tile and St. Joe brick. The old, cramped kitchen was replaced with an updated design that exposed the original brick walls and revealed an existing full-height window. In the back yard, a wooden deck and sliding door addition were removed to restore the modular feel of the building.
