The Stewart Title Award is presented to the Alexander Love Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for its commitment to one of Houston’s little-known treasures. Old City Cemetery has been neglected for much of its history even though it is the final resting place of veterans of the Texas Revolution and one of the Allen brothers, Houston’s founders. The Alexander Love Chapter first became involved with the cemetery during the Texas Centennial in 1936, when members sold commemorative pins to raise money to rehabilitate the cemetery, which was then rededicated as Founders Memorial Park. In 2004, the chapter revived those efforts by adopting the cemetery as an ongoing project. Since then, chapter members have established a database of individuals known to be buried there, located the existing headstones and grave markers and cleaned and documented the monuments. They have also produced cultural programs to increase awareness of Founders Memorial Park and have succeeded in having it designated an Historic Texas Cemetery. In 2008, the chapter dedicated a Texas Patriots Historical Marker at the cemetery, helping keep alive the memory of the men and women who helped settle Houston.
