When new owners began restoring the 1926 Jennings Cleaning and Dyeing Shop in Midtown, the building’s exterior looked much as it had for more than 80 years. The interior, however, was another matter. INFILL Planning and Development designed the renovation to preserve the historic fabric while adapting the building for use as 13 Celsius, a wine bar and retailer. Throughout the project, difficult problems inspired imaginative solutions: The caved-in equipment room was transformed into an open-air courtyard with old dry cleaning equipment used as planters. Inside, an original steam press was reinterpreted as an entry piece. This project demonstrates the crucial role historic preservation plays in creating a vibrant urban environment.
