Joe Meppelink and Marisa Janusz work for a firm that's won a Good Brick Award and live next door to a Good Brick winner. Now they have a Good Brick of their own.
Their home is one of three nearly identical Folk Victorian cottages built around 1893 in the Old Sixth Ward. Although it had survived more than a century, this charming house faced an uncertain future -- at about 850 square feet, it was simply too small for modern life. This successful renovation and expansion is the product of a joint effort by caring and dedicated owners who are also architects, and a skilled contractor who understands and respects historic structures.
Joe and Marissa work for Ray + Hollington. The architectural firm was very supportive of their efforts. The two-story addition Joe and Marissa designed doubled the size of the house. The new construction reflects the historic character of the original, but is distinct from the historic building. This vision was skillfully executed by Charles Bosch of In-Site Design Build Studio.
Joe and Marissa selected salvaged materials to maintain the architectural integrity. They lived in the house throughout construction and did much of the critical work themselves. In awarding this Good Brick, Greater Houston Preservation Alliance recognizes the skill and talent of Joe Meppelink and Marisa Janusz and congratulates them on a job well done.
