Anyone familiar with the magnificent JPMorgan Chase Building won't find it difficult to understand why JPMorgan Chase is receiving GHPA's President's Award. The bank's careful maintenance and sensitive restoration of this 1929 landmark, originally the Gulf Building, sets an outstanding example for Houston's business community. JPMorgan Chase's commitment to this building and to downtown Houston makes an important statement about the value of historic preservation and our shared heritage.
In 1989, Texas Commerce Bank restored the building in what is still one of the largest privately funded preservation projects in U.S. history. JPMorgan Chase has carried on the tradition, recently restoring the terrazzo floor in the building's Banking Hall but keeping the hollows worn in the marble border where generations of customers stood to conduct their banking business. In 2003, the company also had the building designated a City of Houston Landmark. It was already a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The President's Award recognizes JPMorgan Chase for the company's consistent and substantial support of Greater Houston Preservation Alliance and historic preservation in Houston.
